Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital Pet Health Alert - Rabies

Our state veterinarian, Dr Emilio Debess, has informed us of three positive rabies tests in bats last week. A bat found at a residence in Central Point (Jackson County) tested positive for rabies at Oregon State University, Veterinary Diagnostics Laboratory on October 3rd. A second bat tested positive for rabies in Benton County after biting a human. A third bat tested positive for rabies in Umatilla County from an animal rehab facility.

This is a reminder from the veterinarians at Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital for people and their pets to stay away from bats which may be sick, flopping around, and acting "un-bat like". Trying to handle or pick up a sick bat may result in a bite or exposure, which will probably result in post exposure rabies shots.

Cats are naturally attracted to bats and their contact may lead to a rabies exposure. If a cat finds a bat, Federal and State law requires that they be immediately euthanized, or have to endure 6 months of quarantine. Statewide, very few cats are adequately vaccinated for rabies.

Please call us at 503-579-3300 to check your pet's vaccine status. Or, if you prefer, you can check here, or by clicking on the Pet Portal menu button above.
