This impressive facility opened its doors in October after years of planning between two important institutions for animals in our state. This alliance between the Oregon State Veterinary school and the Humane Society gives veterinary students much needed "hands-on" experience in their medical and surgical training while providing much needed care of the shelter animals.
The idea for this win-win alliance came from Dr. Laird Goodman while serving as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Oregon Humane Society eight years ago. At the time, the Oregon State Veterinary College was struggling with accreditation issues - partly due to the low case load for the students. The Oregon Humane Society, meanwhile, was struggling with providing care for the animals in its care. Prior to the Medical Center opening, local Veterinarians donated basic services to the shelter - mostly in the form of complimentary physical exams. Since 1991, Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital went beyond this and provided between $15,000-$40,000 annually in pro bono veterinary care for shelter animals needing critical, internal medicine and surgical care.
Dr. Goodman was part of the original delegation presenting the idea to the Dean of the Veterinary College and later served on the design committee for the facility.
