strings[1] = "Meet Jack and Sally. Two playful puppies that are growing up fast – and it’s now the appropriate time to undergo their neuter and spay (ovariohysterectomy) surgeries. When male and female puppies reach 6 months, responsible pet owners choose to neuter or spay their pets. This includes male and female kittens also! You will see in the following pictorial how much is actually involved in making a neuter or spay surgery a safe and pain free experience for your pet.

For male pets like Jack, we perform a neuter surgery or castration which involves the removal of the testicles. This procedure is done through a small skin incision and is important to Jack’s long-term health and well being. The medical benefits include eliminating or reducing the risk for testicular and/or prostate cancer, while the behavioral benefits include lessened tendency to roam and lessened dominant behaviors, including urinary marking and aggression.

For female pets like Sally, we perform a spay surgery, more correctly referred to as an ovariohysterectomy (OVH). This procedure is a major abdominal surgery which involves removing Sally’s ovaries and uterus. As with Jack, this procedure is important to Sally’s long-term health and well-being. The medical benefits include eliminating the risk of uterine disease, as well as ovarian, and mammary cancer while the behavioral benefits include eliminating the unwanted or negative effects of in heat behavior.";

	strings[2] = "Before surgery, the doctor performs a physical examination on Jack and Sally. This pre-surgical exam ensures that they are healthy and safely able to undergo surgery.";

	strings[3] = "A pre-anesthetic injection is given to Jack and Sally to help control pain during the procedure and to make them feel more relaxed. This pre-anesthetic pain medication helps to ensure less pain and discomfort experienced by our patients both during and after surgery.";

	strings[4] = "At their last visit to Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital, Jack and Sally had blood drawn for their Junior Wellness profiles. These lab tests determined that Jack and Sally’s organs are functioning properly and that they are healthy to safely undergo anesthesia.";

	strings[5] = "An intravenous catheter is placed in the front leg. Intravenous (IV) fluids are another safety feature at Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital to ensure proper hydration, along with electrolyte and blood pressure control during the surgical procedure.

Jack and Sally are both given an IV injection of Propofol, an anesthetic induction agent to allow them to be intubated. This more expensive induction agent is the same one used in human hospitals for pediatric surgery because it is so safe and provides a quicker recovery after surgery.";

	strings[6] = "Jack is intubated with an endotracheal tube placed into his trachea. &nbspThis tube allows delivery of oxygen and Sevoflorane anesthesia throughout the procedure. Not many veterinary hospitals use Sevoflorane because it is a more expensive anesthetic. However, it is considered the “Gold Standard” and it follows our commitment to only use the best and only safest drugs for our patients. Sevoflorane is also the same anesthetic agent used in human hospitals for pediatric surgery.

Jack is safely under anesthetic. Because pet’s eyes remain open during anesthesia, a sterile lubricant is placed in each eye so they won’t become dry.";

	strings[7] = "A multi-parameter monitor anesthetic monitor is used to ensure a safe anesthetic experience. This monitor is similar to those used in human hospitals that simultaneously monitor heart rate, EKG, blood pressure, blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels.

Like all of our surgical patients, Jack and Sally receive Intravenous (IV) fluids during their procedure. These fluids provide a safer anesthetic experience by supporting the cardiovascular systems and blood pressure. They also help Jack and Sally metabolize the injectable anesthesia which aids in a quicker recovery from anesthesia.";

	strings[8] = "During anesthetic and surgical procedures, your pet's body temperature drops considerably without proper attention. At Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital, we use a sophisticated warming system to keep our patients warm, comfortable and safe!"

	strings[9] = "Like all of our surgical patients, Jack and Sally receive a complimentary nail trim.

Because any pet can become lost or escape, their responsible parents have decided to have a microchip placed in each dog to ensure their safe return. The microchip is implanted under the skin between the shoulders. This microchip can be scanned by any veterinarian or animal shelter if one of these adventurous dogs should become lost.";

	strings[10] = "The surgical technician prepares the incision site. The hair is clipped and the area surgically prepped.

The Neuter and OVH procedures begin!";

	strings[11] = "Jack and Sally are fortunate they are having their procedures done at Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital, since we use a surgical laser for all of our surgical cases. The use of the laser decreases surgery time, helps control bleeding, decreases pain at the surgical site and aids in the healing process.";

	strings[12] = "Jack’s testicles are located, the vessels ligated with sutures and the organs removed.

Sally’s uterus and ovaries are located and the vessels ligated with sutures before removing the reproductive organs.";

	strings[13] = "As pioneers in pain management, we follow a multi-modal approach to pain management to ensure a comfortable, pain free recovery. As such, both Jack and Sally receive another injection of pain medication intra-operatively called Rimadyl- a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. Likewise, before closing the incision a local anesthetic is infused at the surgery site as an additional method to control pain. Both incision sites are closed with absorbable sutures. These sutures will dissolve and do not require a future visit for suture removal.";

	strings[14] = "Jack and Sally are taken off of their gas anesthesia, and gently recover with the aid of a surgery technician. This monitored time with a certified veterinary technician ensures a safe recovery process.

Jack and Sally remain at Murrayhill for the rest of the day, resting comfortably. If they are anxious they are given additional medications to ensure a peaceful recovery.";

	strings[15] = "Jack and Sally’s family come to the hospital to meet with the doctor before taking them home. They receive special instructions on how to care for Jack and Sally after their surgeries and are given the opportunity to ask questions. This allows the owners the opportunity to fully understand Jack and Sally’s surgical experience.

Jack and Sally are recovering and feeling as playful as ever! Their family is as happy to see the pups as they are! They will go home with additional pain medication to ensure a comfortable, pain free recovery.";

	strings[16] = "We hope Jack and Sally’s spay and neuter adventure has helped educate you further in your pet’s heath. You can see why nearly 80% of the cost of these procedures is associated with ensuring a safe anesthetic and surgical experience and a pain free recovery for your pet! Please feel free to ask any of our friendly team members if you have any concerns or questions.

Thanks also to Jack and Sally and their owners, Kristin and Jason for their generous participation.";
