Pet Hospice

What Is Pet Hospice? Pet hospice is medical care that focuses on reducing the severity of disease symptoms, rather than trying to provide a cure. The goal of hospice is to prevent and relieve suffering and to improve the quality of life for patients facing fatal illnesses or end of life. Hospice is about compassionate end-of-life care, for both the pet diagnosed with advanced disease or terminal illness as well as for the family of that pet.

Why Offer Pet Hospice? As most of us have personally experienced, our pets are true family members and play an important role in our lives. More and more is being published about human-animal bond and it's importance in the lives of humans. Today, people are much less willing to elect an automatic euthanasia when a poor prognosis is given or a terminal illness is diagnosed. Many of these pets still have a good quality of life and are still interacting with the family. In these cases, if the family is willing to provide the care required to ensure that the pet remains comfortable and enjoys a good quality of life for the time he/she has remaining, pet hospice is a good option for that family. Typically, patients are enrolled when their life expectancy is 6 months or less, although each case is assessed individually.

Our distinguished veterinarian, Dr. Deb Miller, is creator and facilitator of the Murrayhill Hospice Program. If you have a pet that is nearing end of life or has serious medical issues, please call for an appointment with Dr. Miller to discuss hospice care.
