Heartworm in Dogs and Cats
 |
Canine heart infected with heartworm
|
| |
Dogs are infected with heartworms when they are bitten by an infected mosquito. This means that even indoor dogs and those that do not have contact with other pets are still susceptible. Currently, the incidence of heartworm disease is low in Oregon but is becoming more and more prevalent as a result of our mobile society. We currently follow the recommendations of the American Heartworm Society and other experts in advising annual heartworm testing and prevention for all of our canine patients. The only way to prevent the spread of this fatal disease is to test your pets and place them on a preventative medication such as Sentinel®. |

The mosquito is the primary carrier between heartworm infected animals and others.
