PET HEALTH ALERT: CAUTION TO DOG OWNERS REGARDING CHICKEN JERKY PRODUCTS
| |
The Doctors at Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital are joining the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) in issuing a caution to consumers about a potential association between illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky products.
The suspected products are chicken jerky products imported from China. Australian news organizations are also investigating an association between illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky in Australia and at least one firm in Australia has recalled their chicken jerky product.
The FDA, in addition to several veterinary diagnostic laboratories in the United States, is working to find out why these products are associated with illness in dogs. The FDA has conducted extensive chemical and microbial testing, but to date, scientists have not been able to determine a precise cause for the reported illnesses. The FDA continues to actively investigate the problem.
Recommendations for Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital Clients:
- So far, there have been no recalls in the U.S. but the Doctors at Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital suggest that you discontinue feeding chicken jerky products imported from China. If it is unclear where the product came from, do not feed.
- Owners of small dogs must be especially careful to limit the amount of
these products.
- If you choose to feed your dog chicken jerky products, watch your pet
closely. Stop feeding the product if your dog shows any of the following
signs, which may occur within hours to days after feeding the product:
- decreased appetite
- decreased activity
- vomiting
- diarrhea, sometimes with blood
- increased water drinking or increased urination
- Although most dogs appear to recover, some dogs have died.
- Call us at 503-579-3300 if any of the above signs are observed. We should examine your pet and perform blood & urine testing as well as report the illness to the FDA.
